Integrative Alexander Technique?

Integrative Alexander Technique (IAT) is an experiential process that can be used to change the quality and impact of your actions, from everyday movements to high-stakes communications. Learning to use IAT is a process of collaborative experiments, putting the essential principles to work in your life and work.

IAT is a way to access your underlying coordination to help you move more efficiently, and therefore think and communicate more effectively.

There are many wonderful teachers of the Alexander Technique across the world who follow different styles and lineages.

What differentiates the “Integrative” style of teaching is the belief that our clients are always in control. It’s our job is to show them how to use IAT for themselves, so they can get better at doing the things that matter most.

Choice is paramount. If you can choose to do something, you can choose to do it differently.

Whatever results you’re seeking, you’ll be empowered with new skills and gentle encouragement to move you in the right direction.

Who was F.M. Alexander?

The Alexander Technique was developed by Frederick Matthias (F..M.) Alexander (1869 - 1955) in the decades straddling the turn of the 20th century. He was an actor, and he developed this approach to help him maintain vocal health while performing. Put simply, he discovered that the head-spine relationship has a global effect on everything we do, and that he could choose to do something differently to improve his performance.

IAT takes the principles introduced by F.M. and puts them into action to shift how you approach your daily life and your long-term goals.

My teacher, Cathy Madden, was a student of Marjorie Barstow (1899- 1995), who was one of F.M. Alexander’s first group of teacher trainees.

F.M. Alexander is not without controversy. His early writings express elitist, racist, and sexist ideas.

These ideas in no way reflect my thinking or teaching. I believe that whole-self integration can inform how we address bias and the impacts of bigotry and racism. I do this work because of the way it champions freedom, choice, and each person’s specialness in this world.

Getting started with Integrative Alexander Technique (IAT)

First, a few questions

What's not working? What is working? Where do you need to get to? In our initial session we discuss your goals, examine your strengths and blockers, and then co-create a plan for change.

Next, an intro to IAT

We experiment with practical, everyday movements like walking, standing, sitting—or anything that you do regularly. These are opportunities for investigation, understanding, and improvement.

Then, we bring it all together

If your goals are professional, we might explore scenarios from your work life. If you’re focus is pain or injury, we may target daily activities that impact your healing journey.

Our work together will look different each time, because we follow your curiosity and interests. Coaching is available in a private studio setting and online. The format will reflect your goals and choices.
